Lionel Messi might still be leaving Barcelona as Manchester City will be ready to swoop in should Barcelona debt worsen.
Messi had handed in a transfer request to leave the club but later he changed his mind and opted to stay.
Barcelona has crippling debts of $794 million, The Sun reports, and could be forced into meeting with City to help its bottom line.
The publication reports that City has retained its interest in acquiring Messi as soon as he becomes available.
Making a January switch more feasible is that UEFA rules now allow players to feature in the Champions League for seperate clubs within the same season.
City manager Pep Guardiola is yet to commit to City beyond this season, but the chance of reuniting with Messi could be the added bonus he needs to sign on.
