Sunshine Stars, defender Jonathan Zikiye, has expressed sadness over the cancellation of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season, insisting he and his team could have done better.
You’ll recall, the league chairmen came up with a decision to end the league and use the Point Per Game (PPG) ratio to determine league table positions.
In an exclusive chat with Gistongist, Zikiye believes if the league season had been allowed to continue Sunshine Stars who finished 10th on the log would have done better.
‘‘Before we lost the game that led to the suspension of the league, we lost at home before that game we were 4th on the table and there were still about 13 games to go. In football, anything can happen if the league has ended maybe we would have bounced back to where our target was from the beginning of the season because all through the season we have been around the top four-zone.’’ He said.
The former Kano Pillars player also lamented the home loss that led to Sunshine Stars dropping out of the top five of the league.
‘‘Its unfortunate that before the suspension happened we lost our last game at home and that placed us at about 9th or 10th position. But in football, you know anything can happen if the league had continued maybe we would have struggled back to that position.’’ He told Gistongist.
Speaking further the former youth international was full of praise for the management of Sunshine stars, stating that the Akure side has continued to see to the players’ welfare despite the pandemic.
“Sunshine is still paying me, the pandemic has not stopped the management from looking after the players, they have been outstanding, they have been trying their best,” Zikiye Concluded.
