The scholarship was facilitated by the Digital World Forum, a non Governmental Organisation, NGO, founded by the immediate past Director, National Broadcast Academy, Lagos, Engr. Ajibola Abiola, for the promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, STEM, in the country.
Announcing the scholarship when he led some members of the NGO, on a courtesy visit to Faith at her school in Ota, Ogun State, Engr. Abiola pointed out that a career in robotics and artificial intelligence would be suitable for the Mathematics prodigy.
She would undergo the training at the Ibadan-based Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria.
Faith Odunsi, a 15 years old girl of a secondary school in Ota , Ogun State, registered the country’s name in gold, after defeating other contestants from all the continents of the world namely Africa, Americas, Asia , Europe and Australia, to win the Global Open Mathematics championship.
The most interesting aspect of her achievement is that she won convincingly as the gap between her and the rest was wide.
Commending Miss Faith for the rare feat, Mr. Abiola noted that she has once again demonstrated that Nigerians have all it takes to rule the world, if provided with the right environment to nurture their God given talents.
While describing Faith as a genius in the class of Isaac Newton, Phythagoras and the rest, Engr. Abiola said , she has not only made the ladies folk proud but also the whole Nigerians & Africans at large.
The former Director, National Broadcast Academy, known before as FRCN Training School, insisted that long years of neglect of science and technology , to a large extend contributed to the economic backwardness that the country is confronted with.
“No nation can survive nor stand the test of time without enmeshing itself in science and technology. The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics , STEM, initiative is a way forward but we need to do more. The difference between one country and another is the Level of science and technology at which each other operates.
“As a way of supporting science and technology, we at Digital World Forum, poised to promote digital initiatives and STEM education, we have decided to offer Faith Odunsi, a training scholarship on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, sponsored by Robotics & Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN), an Ibadan based Robotics Company”
“Citizens have placed Music, Sports & fashion far above Science & Technology which eventually resulted into moral decadence and value disorientation for us, however, entertainment and fashion are not bad in its entirety, but as we celebrate and support young people in the entertainment industry, we should more than proportionately pay more attention to young Stars in the Science and Technology space.
“if Nigeria has attained the much needed height in science and technology, our country would have been able to transform natural resources especially the solid minerals into exportable products” he added, noting that, “We could have made huge revenue by processing Cocoa to chocolate and petroleum into gasoline and others but because we lack the Technology and technical -know -how, we remain one of the poorest & poverty stricken nations in the world”
Acpcording to Engr. Abiola, every developed economies in the world placed priority on science, technology, Engineering and Mathematics, STEM, and that Nigeria Should should do the same.
He vowed that the NGO would not relent in it’s efforts at promoting the study of STEM in schools, especially secondary schools.
Responding, Faith Odunsi, expressed gratitude to the NGO for the scholarship, while appreciating her school, teachers , friends and her parents, as well as the Federal Government.
