ASUU Speaks On Rumoured Agreement With Government

ASUU President Gives Latest Update On Strike

The President, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, has given the latest update concerning the current strike, revealing consultation are on going.

He revealed that he and the body are still waiting on what the government would offer them before they can take next the step.

“We have what the government is offering and have transmitted the same to our members nationwide, and we are consulting on what the next line of action will be. You know a tree does not make a forest, and our union is democratic in nature and practice.

“As for how long the consultation would take, I cannot say, but it may go beyond this week. Whatever we decide on is going to be in the national interest, the interest of our children, the interest of our members and the good of all,” Ogunyemi said.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has agreed to exempt ASUU from the IPPIS and also increased the academic earned allowance to N70bn on Friday.

Speaking further he revealed that he lacked the power to call off the strike, stating that all the branches of the association must to agree.

“I made it clear that I don’t have the power to call off the strike. It is when we get feedback from the branches, then we will collate the responses and get back to the Federal Government. That is why we always tell the government not to allow ASUU to go on strike. Before we go on strike, we would have issued several warnings.

We have to go back to those who empowered us to declare it. It is not something the leadership will just go to the meeting and say, now we have suspended, it can never happen in ASUU, that is the difference between ASUU and other unions, everyone will have input in decision making.

“Our meeting on Friday was to give a report on the feedback collected from our members earlier in the week. We, as representatives of ASUU, are taking some new proposals from the government to our members. We shall return to the Ministry after consultation with the various organs of the union.” he said.
